Hey ppl
I am almost at the end of the box of wood chunks that came with my smokette. I want to know if I can use hickory nuts instead of chunks Roll Eyes Is there any reason I shouldn't use the nuts? There are hickory trees everywhere here but nothing that is cut and cured.
Please tell me something quick cuz I have enough for only one more smoking.
Thanx!

Candy -- I did a Google search and snagged the info bleow from from Smoky Hale (barbecuen.com).

"My question is, have you ever tried using "fresh/green" or "dried" Hickory nuts in your coal bed to produce flavor while smoking? If so, would like to know what the results were. If not, would like to here your valued opinion about doing so. I usually smoke chicken and turkey utilizing a charcoal bed and soaked hickory chips (wrapped in a foil pouch) in a fire box.

Thank you in advance for your response.
Sincerely,
Kevin V.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your kind words.

I use green and dry hickory nuts, shells and the outer husk. With green nuts you have to be careful of them exploding from steam when they get hot. Can be quite a surprise.

Have fun,
Smoky

So... I would assume that using the nuts will work. It will be up to you or someonne else on the Forum to decide amounts, but it does sound like you are safe.

Let us know how it works! Big Grin
candy,
i am the one who uses whole pecans.
i can see no reason why you can't do the same with hickory especially if you let them dry a little like wheelz post says to do.
by the way if you have hickorys you must have squirrels. does your squirrel herd need thinning?
the ones in florida live on pine cones and have a turpintine taste.

Well,
Living in our neighborhood are lots of raccoons and possums. I guess I might let Jack go after the raccoons. But the neighbors might complain. The possums are just too cute!

We used whole pecans to smoke with once when we ran out of wood for our Thanksgiving turkey. It worked very well for us. We went with that plan over and over. We were using a Brinkman smoker at the time. I'm not sure if you can use them in a Smokette, don't they recommend using dry wood? I'd check with Customer Service.

Prisonchef I have more than my share of those little tree monkeys, can't imagine trying to smoke one though.
Now I am motivated to try nuts. Muleman1 just curious. Why can't you use walnuts?
OPOSSUM Eeker Yech!! My smokette is on a picnic table on my back porch and the other day I forgot to empty the dripping pan-just left it sitting there. That night there was a possum eating the drippings when I went out to empty it. Scared the bejeebers out of me. They do not have a friendly growl either! And they have some ugly teeth.

good lord peg has a recipe somewhere for treerats in sourcream sauce. makes me wanna load the blackpowder gun up and get a few.
possum-thats a whole nother story. best way is trap them and feed them milk and rice for 3 days and then butcher. as all of you know who read the post about my butchering the rabbits peg raised i heaved while doing it but got the job done anyway. so will pass on the possum due to that and not the taste (and they sure do look mighty pretty if ya put a crabapple in their mouths while they cook)
coons??!!- now there was some fun for a yankee boy stationed in tennessee. got invited to hunt the things. man it has everything a guy could love--whiskey,dogs,loaded guns, running in the woods what the heck more could you ask for?? is it safe?? heck no!!!!!! but darn sure fun!!!! and they don't taste bad either!!!!
