I'm thinking of using Steven Raichlen Basic BBQ Rub for my first pork shoulder. By "first", I'm talkin' my first time smoking ANYTHING. I'm the newest of newbies.

The ingredients:

1/4 cup coarse salt (kosher or sea)
1/4 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
1/4 cup paprika
3 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds

Do y'all think this will work okay? I'm not necessarily looking for "should taste good" or "won't taste good" answers, as much as I'm looking for potential problems with specific ingredients. I've only used this rub for grilling in the past.

Do you see anything in the rub that could cause problems? With the brown sugar, for example, be okay, or will it just burn up?

Thanks.
