Weber has a site that lists smoking woods. I don't know how comprehensive it really is, but locust isn't one of them. Try burning some of it (not in the smoker)and see what the smoke smells like. If it smells like something you might like, then try it on a chicken since they'r cheap.

It might keep you from having to scrub down the inside of your smoker if it turns out to be bad.
The toxic part would be the thorns if you ask me, not that I know much more than what I was taught as a youngster. The female tree will not have these and yes, it will look a little like a shaggy bark hickory tree...BUT, if you smell the smoke 1st as EZ suggested, I don't think a person would want to use it to smoke with.
