I am looking to purchase one of the remote alerting thermometers and was wondering who owns one, your experiences with them, which are best brands, do they work as they say up to 100' and do they show the actual temperature of the meat or only alarm when the temp is reached, etc., etc.

I know the Maverick and I think Polder make models of these.

Thanks for you help.

I have a Maverick and have been using it for more than a year. It works perfectly, and has good range as long as the battries in the transmitter are good. I changed them once in a year.

It shows the actual temp of the meat all the time, as well as your set temp. I've had no problem with mine at all and would buy another.
I have an Oregon Scientific that beeps 5 degress before temp. Has good range, as I can sit in the basement 50 feet away no problem. Downside is it has preset temps. Well done pork is 170. I just OK the beeper and let it go. It will keep on going. Overall a good but not great unit.
I've been driving around town for the last hour and a half trying to find a remote thermometer that doesn't have the preset temps. I've given up at this point. I had one with the presets before and it was an annoyance. I think I'm gonna order a Maverick on-line. It sounds like a good product. One thing I was curious about was whether or not you could replace the probe that monitors the smoker temp with a meat probe so that you could monitor 2 cuts of meat with the one unit.
If you have a Target store in your area, they have a great, and inexpensive units. It's not a remote.. just a cable type. No presets.. about $19. You can buy two for the price of some of the dual probe units.. If one probe or unit goes bad, you still have another to work with. If a dual probe goes.. you are out of luck until you get a total replacement.

BTW, my unit got funky the other day.. thought.. "oh oh".. (I left it out in the rain.) Heated up the oven and put the probe end (only) in there for about 1/2 hour. Still read funky. It turned out it was water inside the main unit. Put that in the oven once it had cooled down to a point where it wouldn't damage the electronics.. and it finally evaporated all the moisture and all is ok. Calibrated in ice and boiling water.. Yee Haw.
