I can guess what the replies will be but here goes.

I'm comparing a Cookshack and a Treger smoker.

Both are in the $500 - $700 range.... I know I'm not comparing apples to apples, as one is electric the other burns pellets. But has anyone on here owned both? Those are the replies I'm looking for.

thanks

Yes, you're correct, you comparing apples to oranges.

The challenge is more that you need to determine what method you will be using more.

The Traeger's are grills first that you can smoke on
The CS's are smoker and you can't grill on them.

Thinking about what you want to cook and how might help answer the question.
Thanks for the advice... A little more info. I have a weber grill for cooking steaks, etc but the local Trager dealer told me that once I cook a steak on a Trager I'd be giving my Weber away.... of course he wants me to buy the Trager. As for cooking in the snow, etc... I live in Colorado Springs (orginally an Okie from all over Oklahoma) and we don't get that much snow here... so that's not a big issue.

But I've decided to go with a Cookshack... more specifically the Cookshack Smokette Essential. There are only two of us but I'll put it too good use..

As for breaking it in,,,,,, do you advice just firing it up and burning a couple of ounces of wood, or putting a cheap piece of meat and wood in it and cooking it? IF so,,,,, what's the best wood and meat to "season" the smoker? How long should I break it in?

I'll let you know when I get it and fire it up.

John,

Check out the thread at the top of the owners "start here" and read the "lessons for new users" at the top of the open forum, you'll see more helpful "new owners" information.

Congrats and welcome.

p.s. Put some good lump in a weber and I'm not sure that a good hot steak over lump wouldn't be better than a Traeger steak. It's not like you'll be smoking it, you'll be grillin' it.
I have a Traeger Lil Tex, a Weber charcoal grill, and now a SM020. Each does well with different things.

I use my weber for steaks usually (sometimes I throw them on the traeger if I am grilling corn or potatoes also). I use the traeger for lots of veggies if cooking for a lot of people, as well as chicken, fish, etc. The SM020 pretty much does all my smoking now. I think you need all 3!
