I got a birthday coming up and my wife bought me a smoker that a buddy had found. We have looked everywhere for a good quality smoker and they were either to small or too expensive. Well the one she bought me definitely isnt too small.

Its a 1000 gallon propane tank with a huge cylinder fire/wood box on one end. It is built on to a 3/4 ton chevy truck frame for a trailer. It has 2 huge/heavy doors on each side of the tank and the door for the smoke box is one the end. I need some help on a few things.

I need to paint it, is it necessary to use a primer?
The doors are exremely heavy and have no counter weights. With doors on both side of the cooker, any ideas?
The thermostat is set complete on the other end from the firebox by the smoke stack, instead of in the middle of the doors. I will install one or can someone recommend something better since the cooking surface is so huge. At time i will be cooking one brisket and a rack of ribs, other time i may have the thing full who knows.

I cooked this weekend and the food turned out great is was just alot longer than expect, but havent ever cooked on anything this huge. I think I need to spend about a full week gather wood for this monster.

I appreciate everyones help

You'll need high temp paint for the fire box and smoke chamber the rest of the frame anything goes. I would prime any metal before painting. Not sure if there is a high temp primer at the depot. On my big boy offset smoker I have a thermo at the fire box end as well as the stack end of the smoke chamber. When you are using this size and type of rig I feel you can't have enough monitering.
