I have been smoking meat for a few years now. I just retired my first smoker that I built myself. I just purchased a 008. I have finished seasoning it and I am ready to try the big test....Turkey.

My question is.....How much sawdust do I need to smoke a turkey for 9 hrs?

Unfortunatly, I have a lot of sawdust style because I used this in my old smoker.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your turkey will not take 9 hours to be done. You should be cooking it by temp probe. 160* in the breast, 170* in the thigh, juices run out clear when you stab the thigh with a knife.

You should turn that Smokette up all the way and use 2-4 ounces of wood chunks in the woodbox. Sawdust will burn up real quick and not give you quality smoke. Use 1 0r 2 of the chunks you get with the Smokette. If you think you just have to use the sawdust, put it in a foil pouch and poke some holes in it, then place it in the woodbox.

Cool
Sawdust is good for cold, low temp smokes. If you try to use it in a higher temp (above 150) it will just burn too quickly.

I can't give you a recommendation for sawdust that way, maybe someone who does that method can help.

And please tell me you're not doing your first Turkey for Thursday. Bad time to experiment, but we'll try to help if we can.
Troy,

Welcome to the forum! Ditch the sawdust and snag a 2-3 oz piece of oak or fruit wood, even if you have to take a walk in the woods to find it. It's all you'll need.

Smokin is correct. Not a good idea to do a first-timer on the big day. Good luck though if you're gonna follow thru! Come to the forum with questions.
