I reuse it all the time. Maybe just cut back a little on the new wood.

I reuse it all the time, too. Whichever side of the wood is less charred goes down.
Reusued wood won't produce more smoke, but what it will do is present a clean smoke as the impurities will have burned off.
Most likely it didn't burn because you had a short cook or it was the placement of the wood in the smoke box. Put them in the front near the bend in the heat elements.
