Received my smokette yesterday :-)

Last night I put in 4 oz of wood and set it to 225 for 4 hours to season.

Today I went to clean it and found that the wood was dark, but only 1 spot on 1 chunk looked like it had burned (visible ashes). Smelled nice and smoky though.

The interior has a very light brown smoke haze on it. Still looks pretty bright in there.

Is this typical? Not sure what to expect. I just put in another 4 oz and set it to 225 again to see if I get similar results.

Is this normal for seasoning? How dark should it get? How much wood is typically reduced to ashes?

Cannot wait to get this thing seasoned and start smoking. I have a brisket covered in rub waiting to go in tomorrow. . .

Thanks,

Mike

Sounds like you are on the right track Mike.

Watch out for the newbie's most common mistake - using too much wood on that first piece of meat, makes for a bitter smoke. I would rather go light on the wood and wish I had used more than to use too much and wish I hadn't!

Congrats on your purchase and "Welcome" to the forum! Keep us possted on your first smoke. It's always interesting to us.
hi mike..when i seasoned my smokette i bought a very cheap and very fatty piece of chuck roast...i use to work with the butcher years ago and he got me exactly what i needed...plenty of fatty meat...smoked that for 3 hours at 225 and then checked it out...perfect seasoning and i threw the meat away...i really think you need some pork or beef fat to really do the job...comments???
