Closest thing, I've had to smoked crappie would be smoked largemouth bass, and it was pretty tastey.

It's been a long time since I had it, and I didn't do the smoking so I'm afraid I can't help you much on the "how to and what fors".

But if I were you I would scale, and fillet and give a small batch a trial smoke using a mild wood.
My Dad used to smoke crappie and catfish. As far as I recall, he just tossed it in the smoker with some wood.

I agree with GeyserQ, start modestly, then add fancy stuff as you go.

Let us know how it goes. I was going to say that we have lots of crappie in Oklahoma, then I noticed that you are from OKC, so I guess you know that.
