My smoker is now tripping the GFCI. I noticed this after it would stop heating. Any ideas what’s causing this?

How old is your Smokette? More info needed in order to assist.
I still get the occasionally tripping of my GFCI breaker when I first use my CS after it's been sitting a while. I keep it well covered in a covered patio outside so it doesnt get wet but humidity must be a factor. Breaker will trip after first 3-4 minutes. I usually switch to a non-GFCI outlet and it continues fine. If I switch it back to the GFCI protected it works fine, and if I use it again in a short period it works fine as well.
So there must be something with the heating element leaking and humidity. Enough to trip the circuit but not a "fatal" flaw.
Residual moisture is the likely culprit, maybe around the element connections to the power. . Not certain and I am no electrician. A qualified tech could check for a leak or what I’ve heard called a “potential” whatever that is.
I think "potential" just refers to an electrical charge (voltage) relative to ground, where it shouldn't be. Moisture in that situation would enable a small current to flow, possibly tripping the GFCI.
Jay, exactly!
Thanks for the explanation of potential and the link. Should be a help to lots of folks.
