Boston Butt Roast?
Pork Butt Roast?
Pork Shoulder Roast?

From what I have heard, a boston butt pork roast really does not come from the butt end of the pig, but for some reason, it has that in the name. I have also heard that it is really a shoulder roast (like a picnic without the skin and cut square).
I even saw a label on one in Winn-Dixie that called it a "Pork Butt Shoulder Roast".

I guess a Picnic is more or less the entire shoulder with skin, not cut to a square shape like a butt roast is.

There seems to be lots of confusion regarding this issue, so I was hoping to get it cleared up for everybody here on the forum. Any input will be appreciated.

That's like Top Sirloin Steak, it really isn't sirloin at all, it comes from a piece called a "Top Butt".

Thanks Tom,
I couldn't get your link to work, but I copied it and got to the site just fine.

Another question, are picnics just as good as butts for smoking? Butts seem to be more popular. Is this because the picnics are more of a pain to prepare because of the skin and bone structure?

Or is it because the butts just taste better or have a better fat content for flavor/moisture?
This is a pretty common topic and long time members of they forum will remember, but it never hurts to discuss it again.

Here are the IBP photos since they tell 1000 words, and show you pictures of the actual cuts. IBP Pork

A Butt + A Picnic = A Shoulder

A butt is the "butt" end of the shoulder (yeah, I know I LOL when I heard that)

A Picnic is the Shoulder (without the foot or the butt end) and tastes more like a ham (because of location)

A Shoulder is huge.
