I don't know if there is much difference between probe brands. I have had good luck with Maverick probes, but I put a piece of shrink wrap about 4" long on each probe centered on the lead/probe joint. This seems to seal out a lot of the nasties as well as reinforcing this joint. Mine are used almost every day, and I get hundreds of uses before I see any problems. Also, Maverick offers long probe leads too if you want them. About 6' vs 3' standard.
I have the Maverick wireless. I like the 2 probe inputs and temp display on the transmitter(so you can use it w/o receiver if you want)For me it's reliable range is about 75' outside and maybe 50-60' if I take receiver inside house. Since my smoker is about 75' from house - I'm screwed there. It works fine from the grill on the deck (20-30' thru one brick wall)

I would consider the Oregon for the 300' range if I get another wireless. The transmitter doesn't have a display so I would be thinking about a reliable non-wireless backup unit just in case. The Thermoworks(nonwireless) has been solid for me

oh yeah... get a spare probe or two - you won't regret it.

Red Face My bad. I assumed he was talking about the units.

In that case stay with the ones that go with the unit. I have a couple different models and some of the probes are different ohms - so they don't interchange w/o big temp reading error.
