008 or 009??

There is not functional difference between the 008 and 009. The only difference, as you ststed the 008 has black steel sides and the 009 is all stainless steel.
I bought the 009 because I live by the ocean and leave the smokette outside most of the time. With the salt air, the stainless is a plus. Also I think it looks nicer.

have had an 008 for years... holds up just fine. only reason to go 009 is if you would for somr reason prefer the all stainless.

If you have the extra coin, go 009. Just looks better, but I'm sure functions the same. It's really a personal preference. Don't spend too much time on this decision, just get one and let the fun begin. You will soon realize that this decision is not really significant.......however you do want to look good. Get the 009.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still wondering exactly what the black surface is. Is it painted on, similar to a grill, or is it more of an enamel?? On my Weber grill, the paint is coming off, but it has to deal with much higher temps.

Has anyone with the 008 experienced any problems with the black surface???

it's not like the paint on a weber kettle. it is like a heavy, tough industrial surface. it holds up very, very well. but mine is not outside in the rain (its in the garage). For use in covered areas, it will outlive you (if you are as old as me)

It's a flat black paint, similar to a wood stove. It's possible to scratch or chip it and the steel underneath might get a little surface rust. A bit of stove polish can help. The outside stays cool enough to touch, so it's not going to burn off.

It's actually called a "powder coat" and is a very durable finish.

hmmm... seems like I'm thinking I'd like to take the money saved and get the cover and possibly the cold smoke baffle.

i was told that the stainless is for salty air. not having to clean the stainless is a major plus. jan
