You do not need to preheat at all. I do sometimes when doing jerky or poultry. Preheat without the woodbox in. Put the woodbox in when you put in the meat. You can have it pre-foiled and wood already in.

If you are talking about the initial seasoning, all you need in is a full box of wood and let it go full blast for 8 hours or until the wood is all burned up.
