I have my Amerique on a covered patio, and I plug it directly into an outlet with no extension cord. I have been doing this for more than two years with no issues until recently.

Whenever I start my smoke, the GFCI will trip when the heat element first comes on, and once I re-set it and start over, all is good for the rest of my smoke, even if it's 20 hours.

Any thoughts?

As JT said GFI do go bad and so do breakers, particularly if they have tripped several times.

GFIs have also been known to be finicky about length of wire in their circuit, humidity, etc.

But then again as Smokin_on_the_Prairie suggested the element may well have developed a hair line crack.

I believe I'd start with the GFI. Also does your GFI have an in use cover or just a little flip up cover on it?

It could be as simple as the GFI picking up a little moisture if it isn’t properly covered while something is plugged in to it.
