We have a Laurel Oak in our backyard. Didn't know what different smoke profiles that different oaks have. I hear a lot about white oak but not the lesser known oaks. Silly question but has anyone ever tried smoking with acorns. I can't go in my backyard without getting beaned in the head with one, and it's a replenishable resource to boot.

Thanks,
Mark

Not all oaks are the same. Some red oaks are very sappy. Post oaks sometimes smell really realy bad when cut into. Someone said liveoak is a nasty smoke. Maybe because it is evergreen. There are also many sub-genus varieties of red and white oaks and are widely planted for many years now as ornamental and landscape trees. I am not sure about laurel oak trees. The small red oak tree in my backyard that I trim and use is a hybrid called Scarlet Oak. No problems with it, actually very good. I don't know about acorns, I have used a few nut shells like pecan, hickory, almond. Not bad in moderation. Whatever you use, be sure it is dried thoroughly. I have been using alot of redoak and muscadine that is well over 2 years old and creates alot of crusty buildup in the top of the smoker anyhow. Both woods had been in the summer sun all summer one year.
Here in florida we have several differnt kinds of oak, I guess they are all a red varity some are live oak, some water oak. I dunno but I do know I fresh cut a peice about 1 inch in dia and short enough to go into the CS wood box and it's my favorite. I use whatever neighbors tree needs trimming that day.
