Ash or Basswood??

I have the opportunity of getting some ash and basswood from Minnesota in my Father-in-law's yard on a lake.

Does anybody have any experience or information as to if these woods are ok to use in our Smokettes?

Basswood is an excellent wood for woodcarvers (I'm one of that group of folks).. but, I doubt it's any good for smoking food. It is considered a hardwood only because it is a deciduous tree (the leaves fall in the winter).. but, otherwise it is a softwood.

Ash, on the other hand is a true hardwood and it is ok for smoking. I have it available but have never used ash except for woodturning.

Others might have good specific references.. but you might want to check this website..
