Basswood is an excellent wood for woodcarvers (I'm one of that group of folks).. but, I doubt it's any good for smoking food. It is considered a hardwood only because it is a deciduous tree (the leaves fall in the winter).. but, otherwise it is a softwood.

Ash, on the other hand is a true hardwood and it is ok for smoking. I have it available but have never used ash except for woodturning.
