You might want to check out that ash tree closely, if it grows near the house and there would be a danger of it falling on your roof: the EA Borer is killing off most ash at a rapid rate. Being an enthusiastic morel mushroom hunter this is a sad thing, as the white ash is a favorite host for that fungi. To answer your question, I would think the ash tree would be alright to smoke with, but I have never used it.

Thanks guys.

Willy the bracnch that fell is certainly big enough to make a bat or 2 out of.

Happy, We already cut 2 of the ashes down because they were dying and starting to rot. may have been the cause you suggested. BTW, down here in Ohio, we have the most luck on morels around dead elms that still have their bark. So keep an eye on those recently deceased ash!

lol, whats an Ohio guy doing trying to telling someone from the Morel capital of the lower 48 how to look for mushrooms!
I need to backpeddle some here. I erred yesterday. I have Elm trees not ash. I dont know what I was thinking. Interesting note tho. Our house was built in 1909 and we are only the 3rd owner. The second owner was the original owners grandson. Before he left, he gave us pictures of the house when it was just finished in 1910 and there were no trees in the front yard. And another picture taken in 1915 after they had dug up 6 trees "down by the creek" and replanted them in the front yard. In that picture, the trees were less than 2" in diameter. Now they are 2-3 FEET in diameter and only one is missing.

Sorry for the mistake.

I use alot of ash wood in my wood fired smokers and it works great, has a very light delicate flavor to it. I like to add some other kind of wood for flavoring ( apple, hickory, cherry, etc.) I have never tried it in my Cookshack, I figure that the small amount of wood you need in the cookshack your better off using some premium flavored wood.

I wouldn't use the elm in anything though.

Ash may be kinda soft, but it is considered a hardwood tree.
