I smoked chicken pieces yesterday for dinner. I brined it overnight and sprinkled lightly with rub. I had the chicken on the bottom rack and, after removing what I had on the upper rack, I went to move the chicken rack up and farther away from the burner. As soon as the rack was free from the smoker, it tipped and I dumped the entire rack of chicken all over my deck.

My lab gave me that "Can I, can I, oh please let me" look and as soon as I told her "Okay", half of the chicken was gone. I fed the other pieces to the neighbors' dogs.

My kids were sad since that's their favorite. But I think they thought it was worth it watching the dog eat it.

Hi Dennis,

Sorry about the chicken. Glad the dogs liked it. My only hope is that you didn't feed the dogs the chicken while it was still on the bone.

I worked in a vet practice for awhile when I was in college. The doc could have put a new car in the garage once a month from the number of dogs that came in with chicken or shattered spare rib bones stuck in or worse puncturing their throats or intestines.

The doc said dogs should only be given large bones which wont splinter, like beef knuckle or soup bones. Cats are usually more dainty eaters, but they should never have chicken bones either.

Folks, please, please, please, be careful what you feed your pets. The momentary pleasure they get in chewing on a bone that can splinter is not worth the pain, and heaven forbid, the death it might cause.

And while I'm on a roll and the holiday season is at hand: remember, chocolate is poisonous to dogs and they should never be given it.

Sorry about the soap box. But if you've seen the horrible results, as I have, you'll show your critters a bit of "tough love" and never give them spare rib or bird bones of any kind. There are a lot of "nevers" in this post but the worst one is the "never" as in-- never being able to forgive yourself for harming or causing the death of a loved part of your family.
