I received a Brookstone wireless remote thermometer as a gift a couple years ago, and really haven't used it much. The 2 times I used it for roasts in the oven it seemed to work okay. I am awaiting the arrival of my CS Smokette 009 and want to know if everyone thinks this thermometer would work okay, or if I should buy one of the other brands I see in posts.

Hopefully it doesn't work like my Weber does.
On a Weber you select the type of meat and how you would like it cooked. rare, medium ... etc.
The problem with the Weber is it shuts off once the internal temperature hits 180. For grilling that is not a problem., everything is well done or more at that point. For smoking that is not the case. If it doesn't work in the smoker don't throw it out. It may still be good for grilling. The Brookstone cost twice as much as the Weber so it should work.
Hi lpcheng,

Congratulations on your new smoker Smiler

I have an older Brookstone wireless remote thermometer.
It's cool that it wirelesses and talks to you.
The model I had could not set a temp on it.
You could select a category
Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Fish, Lamb, Pork, Veal and Hamburger
Their temps were fixed and could not be altered
You could choose Rare, Med Rare, Medium and well done.
Could not set a specified target temp.
Like 195 for pulled pork also no volume control it.
Maybe yours is a newer model and has those options?

Thank you,
Brian E.
I also have a brookstone remote thermometer but not wireless. Everyone is right that you pick the meat but in my case it is only a guide to what temp it should be cooked for the desired result. It does not shut off at any temp but will not give you an alarm when it reaches the temp you want so you have to keep an eye on it.
It works fine with my 008.

Which model Weber do you have? If it is the one I think it is, they can be a bit tricky, but overall work just fine. They will max out on their alarm at 180, but they will still read higher temps. That said, the best part about them is that they have a great probe that seemingly never goes bad.
"I" wouldn't have a thermometer that I can't select any temperature that I want. In fact, I've returned units that I have bought thinking that the temp could be set only to find the only options are to choose a meat and then 'well done, medium, rare'...or in the case of fowl, no choice whatsoever.

The 'alarm' on the thermo is important to me. I want to be told when the meat hits my desired temperature...not just close to it.

Two cents
