Bypass internal thermostat question

I picked up a Cookshack SM106 and it seems the controller has s*** the bed.
I contacted CS and they quoted me a price of $975 for an IQ4 controller which I thought was very fair, but I can't afford it at this time or shouls I say my wife says I can"t afford it.
I already have 3 smokers and she can't understand why I would want another!
Tony at CS said that maybe I should throw a PID on the unit and that will do the job.
I think im going the pid route but how do I bypass CS thermostat?
Anybody have any idea on how to install a PID on the unit?
