You can use chips if you contain them in a small foil dish like the ones used under pot pies. Be sure to measure the wieght using a postage or food scale. One once of chips are a lot bigger than one once of chunk. Rule of thumb in general: 2 oz. of wood per 10 pounds of meat. Scale that up or down according to your load and you will always find success.
