tons if dry ice. there is a formula on line somewhere to use so many pounds of ice per product, factoring in the time frame. shouldnt be that bad, philly to pitt. we should be on our way up there soon. maybe open a bbq in suburbs..
Both UPS & FedEx will overnight ship refrigerated or frozen food if packed properly, i.e. insulated container and contents protected so that there is no leakage of food or water condensation. If shipping something that is not frozen, those sealed gel packs that you freeze work well but you need a well insulated container.
We ship our pork all the time, using no ice or gel packs. It sometimes goes from Monday until Friday delivery. Never a problem. Thawed, but still crystalized. We have shipped to HI.
Avoid hot weather. Fill the container full, 15-20# minimum. Fill the void with packing peanuts.
UPS and Fedex will ship with up to 7lbs of dry ice, I just sent 50lb's of frozen, vacuum packed fish fillets with 7lb of dry ice overnight, it arrived fully frozen with 3lb of dry ice left in the cooler. I traveled to New Mexico and picked up a cooler, filled it with frozen, roasted Hatch Chiles. then some dry ice and shipped it home with me on the airplane.... So as far as I know you can do it either way..
We don't use Dry Ice, and only use overnight [DHL] if it goes cross country. Our customers don't need to pay $50 - $80 in shipping. Mostly it goes UPS Groundtrak. We can print our own shipping labels off our home computer at their websites.
We did side-by-side comparisons when selecting shipping containers. We stuck a thermometer in each box of meat and monitored it for a week on our basement floor.
