I see cherry wood used frequently for smoking.
Which type of cherry do you prefer, hardwood or fruit tree?
I have access to both types of wood.

I've used both and frankly can't tell the difference. Now, when you are referring too "hardwood" I am assuming that you mean what we call a wild cherry that can grow to great heights and it's fruit is not much bigger than a cherry pit.
If you are using the real fruit-bearing cherry wood, make sure it's not been doused with chemicals.

I have also used both. The wild cherry seems more like hickory or oak to me.
I've used wild cherry too... furniture grade scraps. I don't taste much difference between it and oak or hickory to be honest.
My wood of choice is pecan.
