A while back a friend of mine told me about his favorite bbq restaurant and a condiment
they served called Chow Chow. Being the good friend I am I tried to duplicate the recipe for my pal. I had never eaten at this place and my friends details were sketchy,
so I searched the net and found a few recipes. All the recipes were for roughly the same type of vegetable relish. I made a batch and it was good, but it wasn't the same
Chow Chow my friend was looking for. Since then I was able to visit the restaurant and
taste this stuff for myself. The fine folks there were also kind enough to list the main
Chow Chow ingredients on the menu . The menu claims Chow Chow is supposed to
accentuate the smokey flavor of bbq. The stuff is quite simple, it consists of cabbage, onion, jalapeno pepper, sugar, salt and vinegar. I made some today and it was almost a perfect imitation. The only difference was mine did not have the same "heat" because I took the seeds out of my jalapenos.

Here is my recipe:

1/2 head of cabbage
1 large onion
2 jalapeno peppers (I took the seeds out this time, but next time I won't)
2 T salt
1/2 cup vinegar
2 cubes sugar

Grind the cabbage, onion, and peppers in a food processor until they are finely minced.
Add salt, let stand for 4 to 6 hours, then pour off any liquid. Combine sugar and
vinegar, bring to a simmer and add to minced veggies.

This Chow Chow is really good on pulled pork.
Has anyone ever had anything like this?
If anyone tries this recipe please let me know what you think.

Chow Chow is something I grew up with, but haven't had in a long time. My grandma would make it, and then my dad made it after she wasn't able to any more. He made a relish that was outstanding that had green tomatoes in it. I will see if my mom happens to have the recipe any more. We haven't had any in almost 15 years. It does sound good with barbecue, though. We always used to eat the relish on hot dogs, and with beans.
in a pinch, I think you can buy it at the grocery store, particularly if you live south of the Mason Dixon Line. LOL of course, it won't be as good as home made, then then you won't have as much of your life invested in it either.
