So I'm stocking up my arsenal of wood for my AQ. So far I have red oak, hickory, apple, pear, cherry, and lilac. My question is does different woods produce different color ash? I have used all of them except lilac, has to dry out a few more months, and all the ash except for the oak ends up white and powdery. The oak was black, but completely burnt and powdery. Can you tell if the wood is not dry enough by the color or do some woods produce different colors?
Thanks for any info.

I never paid much attention to the ash either until I used the red oak. Its only got about 3 months drying time. It is split with no bark in 1-2 oz pieces, about the size of Lincoln logs. Its seems dry enough, light for its size and no moisture when split open. The ash really stood out because it was jet black. I used 2 oz of oak and 1 oz of hickory on my last batch of spares. The ribs were good, but I haven't seen ash that color before.
