hey guys, this is my first post here. i just recieved a used fec100 by mail yesterday. this was an ebay purchase. i fired the cooker up this morning after vacuuming out the firepot. i set the temp at 224 and set it to cook for 3 hrs.

at first it seemed to be taking longer than i expected to get up to temp. after 20 minutes it had gone from an oven temp of 76 to 82. but i checked on it 5-10 min later and it was up to 112. so i figured everything was going alright. i came back 10-15 minutes later and the oven temp was over 300!

does anyone have any suggestions what to do in this situation?

thanks,
rob

It is always best to call Cookshack service and let them give you the CORRECT answer ,first.

They don't monitor these forums, and the rest of us will be making guesses and could spend several days.

There are several different controllers, and they can identify by serial number of the cooker.

While you are waiting, open the door for a couple minutes and dump some heat.

If the walls have been cleaned, and it is empty, you can get low heat, and then some spikes.

Some of the new IQ4 s,seemed to go thru spikes for a few hrs and then settle down.

They should be open in Ponca City by know.

Not sure what "situation" you mean. Maybe it took a little time, but it got up to temp, so what's the question?

It takes takes time to come up to temp, so it sounds like 30 to 40 min.

Sounds like this is an older machine, did you buy it from an individual?

The older "traeger" models tended to ramp up a little slower, so just take into account. Just start it for an hour before your cook.

Also you should not there will be some "overshoot" because it's throwing a lot of pellets in trying to get up to temp.

As it approaches your target temp (say 250) just open the door and dump some heat. It will settle down
the guy i bought it from has a call into cookshack, just thought someone here could give me some advice.

okie- the situation is that the oven got 75+ degrees hotter than it was supposed to. i understand spikes in temp but that seems a bit much to me. you say to let it warm up for an hour before cooking? so if i'd have left it alone longer maybe it would have corrected itself?

the controller is the IQ4 the fec is about 1.5 years old

That sounds like the temp overshoot issue. 75 is the extreme, but I've seen it. Remember, it's dumping pellets trying to get UP to temp so there will be overshoot.

It's hard to say if that's the exact issue here. Calls to CS are normally what I recommend if you're concerned.

Starting it early is so it will stability IF you're worried about it.

If you turn it on and let it go, where is it after 1 hour? after 2?
ok i have talked to cookshack they were great (i talked to tony)

i think originally there were more pellets in the firepot that i didn't get vacuumed out and that is why the fire got so high. now when i let it go for an hour is is only off by a few degrees. everything seems to be working.
thanks
