I just wanted to say that looking for the perfect smoker for "ME" has been a great learning experience. I have read, re-read and read some more on the pros and cons of several smokers and a few have been removed from my check list. There are a few that seemed good to me, but after finding this board, my thoughts have changed. No bisquit smoker for me.

These are the smokers that are left on my BUY list and my thoughts:

Cook Shack- This board and its members are really a big influence.

Fast Eddy- He actually E-Mailed me back the same day that I E-Mailed him a price question, super fast! I like service, and service is expensive.

Traeger- Seems real easy.

Smokin Tex- Price does matter to some.

One thing I havent learned is, can you replace the elements on these smokers, or any part that goes bad? And what do any of you think about my choices. If you get time, respond away!

Thanks, Iburnit

I don't know but there aren't many of us out there that can respond as I own both a CS and FE

The FE and Traegers are essentially the same, they're both pellet burners. FE is indeed a great guy and when we can get him to stop for a minute or two, he'll join in the forum to help his FE/CS owners.

All the CS (008, 50, 150) series all have replacable elements, but in 3 hard years with a 150, I haven't had to replace one yet.

CS and Smokin'Tex. I know there are more than one owner of ST here in the forum, but I not a big fan of something made overseas. You can do a search in the forum for ST and you'll see lots of comments about the lack of customer service. They're tried to get better because of these comments, but I haven't heard anything recently. CS however, you can call and they stand by their product very well.

Essentially if cost is an issue, the FE/CS while I have't seen a price, will certainly be closer in price to a 150 than a 50.

So, what kind of price range are you looking at and we can go from there.

There are other traegers that are similar priced to the CS line, so you might have to go that route, but this forum isn't full of pellet heads yet....ow, man, does that make me a pellet head now Big Grin
Iburnit,

I have pretty much done the same thing as you. I have finally decided to get a cookshack. Reading on the forum is what made up my mind. Sure I have read a couple of complaints but the overwhelming majority have nothing but good things to say about their cookshack and the people at cookshack. If your customer satisfaction is that high, you got to be doing something right.

I was going to wait and see what the price of the FE/CS was going to be because I like the fact that it uses wood instead of electricity. However, I just went and looked at the price of a 150 (3K) and if the FE/CS is anything near that price I will have to pass. My price range is more along the line of the 50 model.
Well Ill be darned. I went outside to get the mail and to my happy suprise, the Cook Shack "Guide To Good Barbecue" was handed to me by the mail lady. More to read. GREAT.

As to price range, well to be honest, cheap as possible but would rather pay for what will last, and for what is needed. I have already learned that Q aint cheap, but nothing is.

I would like to also someday try to win a contest lol, you might laugh but I like to win! So that might be a consideration.

As for which smoker to get well the Smokette seems good but am afraid it is to small. I entertain alot to some robust friends! We are a football family and the men are quite, well large people. My son is 9 and weighs 135lbs to make my point,he will be a lineman the rest of his life. LOL

I dont know yet how much moolah will leap out of my pocket. No hurry yet. I am going to wait until after XMAS before making a choice. Until then I will read more and learn. Im rambling again.
Thanks,
Iburnit
Howdy Iburnit,

As far as elements go,my Smokette has lived here on the beach in a nightly salt storm and has been used at the level of many commercial cookers for maybe three/four years.

I can't seem to make it have a problem.

U of Ky '69,bride from Morehead, and kid in Louisville.

A couple of weeks ago the price was the same as the old one, about $2700.00+s&h.

CS is still testing/improving and will market after the first of the year.

As far as the cooker, you are dealing with the same people.

Since I have cooked a lot in your area,I'll speculate on the models.

I kept a friend's Traeger 100 here in Fl for the summer and it was easy.

The three months you have of colder weather there, holding temps won't be as much fun.

Traeger is a thin metal and much more loose.[Still nice]

Eddy has great experience, has developed the techniques on the new cooker, and will give constantly to make it work for you.

FE and Cookshack were a natural bond.

CS is the epitome of service/support and build the perfect oven for the Traeger.

I also have one of the 150/160 s and it is a dream.

Hopefully ,I'll wind up with one of the CS/FE's before long.

With the new FE/CS you can compete most anywhere and it finishes chicken well.

You may find you are spending around $1/hr,depending on the volume of pellets you buy.

Hope this helps a little.
Ya'll check out the post from John in Knoxville.

That could be an easy day round trip for ya'll ,sounds like a fine price, save you the shipping and crating charges.

Cookshack gives you the same great support, new or used, whether you buy from them or not.

These cookers last for many, many years and would be a fine investment.

They may still be under warranty.

It would be easy to check.

If your heart is set on a pellet cooker, although Traeger is an excellent unit and the FE is a customized Traeger. The FE is double wall insulated stainless steel.
If you are considering competition, the CS is not legal except in one organization ( ABA ). The FE is legal. I've never cooked on a pellet cooker and am still in the learning process with my CS 160 so I can't tell you which one cooks better.
Darcy
well if Moolah is an issue the FE is out, I don't know the published price, but it's a lot more than the 50 series.

So, you need to decide, like Darcy said, are you going to stay home or compete.

If you're going to compete, then you'll need to decide charcoal or pellets as that would leave the CS out.

If you're not going to, you wouldn't go wrong with a smokette.

If you're really wanting to go cheap, then you might check out a Weber Bullet. And Chris and his group have a great forum also.
You can get a bullet for under $200 and they're great.Virtual Weber
