The power supply on my old computer crashed yesterday, and I can't access any of my mail or documents files, but this is the number Eddy listed in March of last year: 816-213-3473.

About the computer problem. They couldn't replace the power supply, so I bought a new one. I pulled the hard drive from my old computer, put it in an external drive case, and hooked it to the new computer by USB port.

I was able to copy most files I needed to the new computer, but it will not let me access any files or folders under my user account under Documents and Settings since it is no longer the boot drive. Anyone have any suggestions.

The Geek Squad at Best Buy said they could copy them to DVD, but it would cost $99. I've given them pver $2000 since yesterday and would like to avoid any more if I can.

Any computer experts with suggestions, I would appreciate it.
For acccessing the files in "Documents and settings" on the old hard drive - Go into my computer, and open that drive. Right-click on the "documents and settings" folder and go to the "security" tab. There will be an "Advanced" button. Click that, and go to the "Ownership" tab. replace the owner information on the files/folders with the account from your new PC (Check the box to replace permissions on subcontainers and objects). If the old drive was formatted as NTFS, this will sieze control of the files and allow you to open them. You may get some errors as you go through, but once the ownership is complete you can re-apply security information to the files. To do this, right click on the "documents and settings" folder again, and once again go to security and "advanced". Add you user account with "Full control" permissions and check the "replace permission entries on all...." checkbox at the bottom, then hit "Apply". The second step may not be needed, but it won't hurt. Once this is done, you should have access to all of your files again.

You should try the File Transfer process built within XP. It might work.

Smokin,

I tried to use the Windows Easy Transfer in Vista which didn't work. I went to my grandon's computer which had XP, and that didn't work either.

I'm going to disconnect the hard drive and power cable on my Grandson's computer and attach the hard drive from my old computer and see if I can boot up with it. They both have the same type of cable. I think my new computer has a different type of cable. If it works, I'll get the password off.
