FEC100 question

I have a friend who bought a older FEC100. It has the one piece door handle. It has the old auger style feed system too. He has been using it but he said it goes out by itself after about 1-2 hours. He is afraid to cook on it for anything long because he doesn't want to ruin any meat. My question is.... does anyone know what would be causing this? Thanks!

My first guess would be that someone messed with the intervolometer (how fast the pellets go through the auger) OR the fan isn't working and the air flow isn't there.
