Well, I drove from Ohio to Wisconsin to pick up my new FEC-100 this past week and am in the process of curing it as I write this.

Tomorrow will be my first cook, going to cook up a batch of St' Louis style ribs for Father's Day using the Cookshack Rib Rub that came with the unit.

One thing I did notice on another message board was someone who has permanently vented theirs through the roof in their garage. I noticed a fair amount of smoke coming from mine between the pellet hopper and the side of the oven. Is this normal?

Congrats on our new purchase, I recently purchased a FEC-100 and love it.
I do not have mine vented but no smoke comes out near the hopper. The extended vent must be putting some back pressure on the unit. Not sure if this is ok or not, maybe someone will chime in and let you know. Good luck on your first cook, let us know how it turns out.

No, that's NOT normal.

Is it INSIDE the bin or OUTSIDE the bin?

For Outside:

Check on the bolts attaching the bin/box to the smoker itself, on mine it's 6 bolts.

For Inside:
Is it an IQ model or an auger model? Since you picked it up, it wasn't from CS, so i can't tell what model you have.

On the Auger models, if you EVER have smoke in the hopper, it's a fire working it's way back up the auger into the pellet bin. On an IQ it may just be a strong wind blowing smoke (literally) up the auger into the bin
I have the IQ Model, manufactured 6/9/09, S/N GK-2083. Ornage, I did not have mine vented yet, it was outside. It was pretty windy yesterday. Okie, I will check the bolts as recommended but it definitely was not getting into the bin, it was actually coming from somewhere between the bin and outer skin of the over. I will take a better look today and try and snap a couple of pictures too.
Well, the first cook went without a hitch. I will post some photos later. I watched for the smoke issue the whole time and didn't see any. Maybe the winds we had during the cure caused this, not sure, but I will continue to monitor the situation. I am putting a short stack on it with a weather cap, anything to keep wind from blowing directly into the side vent since I wimm mainly be using this outside.
