I love this smoker and it has operated without a hitch since day one. However, last weekend it had a problem with holding the set temp. No matter where I set the dial (old style Traeger) the temps would go to 320 and stay there. At the time, it was not really an issue as I was just using it to re-heat butts and cook beans. Going to have to cook a load of butts this weekend though and don't want to be that high.

Any thoughts...controller...thermocouple?

I did check the temps with a digital thermometer and they were within a few degrees of the readout on my controller.

Thanks in advance!

I am waiting on a return call from them as I type this. I installed a new controller yesterday & it seems to be holding a pretty tight range (less than a 20 degree swing) but the temps are rising 30 to 40 degrees above the setting. Not sure if there is any way to adjust this or not.

With the controller set on 225, actual (verified) temps are running between 250 and 270. These are the temperatures shown on the cookers digital readout and also on a remote thermometer.

It could be that without any meat in the cooker and ambient temps in the high 90's that it is just hard to hold it down. Going to load it with butts in a while and see what happens.
When we all added the new IQ4 cookers, the warmup period had a lot of spikes and higher temps for about the firsr 8 hrs.

All three of us were in Fl summer heat.

Opened the doors alot,to dump heat, etc.

Settled right down after that.

Now they all run within about 4+/- degrees.

I'm not smart enough to know why, just passing it on.

WaywardSon,where are you.

I'll be flying in to Lexington, tomorrow ,to visit inlaws a few days.
Tom,

I am in Paducah which is about 4 hours west of Lexington, KY...just west of Kentucky Lake.

Edit-I loaded the cooker with butts around 7:00 last night and just got done taking them off...could not have been better. Great color and the bone slid right out. I checked the temps several times during the cook and it never varied more than 4 degrees from the 225 setting.

Bill Vice in Cookshacks customer service was prompt in returning my call and very helpful...not to mention correct:-) I am very pleased with the outcome and more impressed with the cooker than ever.

Now if somebody can just do something about the 110 degree heat index we will have here today!
