It looks to me like dirt from whatever was used to cut the wood into chunks. If it doesn't move, don't sweat it. If it really bothers you, just chop off that small section.
When the wood smolders, the temp will get high enough to kill anything that might be harmful anyway and, who knows how much flavor strange little beasties might add.
The few times i have had what looked like mold, i seared with a propasne toech hefore I used the wood. I was using apple that had a white looking mold on it. I assume the heat from the torch took care of it. Anny coments would be appreciated in case it happens again.
Whew! Since I have to have EVERY barbecue/cooking gadget known to ever hit Home Depot, Barbecue's Galore, OR late night television, I was afraid I was going to have to go out and buy a "propasne toech"!! Sounded like something I 'needed'...bad!
