hard wood scraps?

I know very little about wood or woodworking, but I can relay my experience. I tried using some alder scraps. I was told that although it was kiln dried, it was not treated with anything whatsoever. It made some pretty awful smelling smoke. That was the end of that experiment for me.

Just be sure there is nothing on it or in it except dry wood.

That is just about all that I use. I have access to unlimited oak scraps and I mix it with apple. Works for me.......

One thing to keep in mind is the aging of wood.

While some green wood is used,at times,around 6 months drying/aging is kinda the rule of thumb.

When some woods get two or three years old,some cooks consider them too dry for anything but heat.

Kiln drying seems to be an instant dried,aged wood.
