heating element

I have had my smokette for about 4 years. It is the best thing I ever purchased. I am concerned because I plugged it in the other day while changing the foil. The temperature dial was off but the element was getting hot. Is it starting to go? How long can we expect the heating element to last? Thanks.

i've seen threads before where they've said the element is not supposed to get hot if plugged in but the dial is turned off. but mine has always started to get hot if plugged in... also about 4 yrs old, but it did that from the beginning...

I don't think the element will get hot unless it's getting electricity.

If you have the dial set to zero and it get's hot, probably an issue with the dial.

I've had the same problem with my ST since day one...if it's plugged in the element stays hot. I just unplug it when I'm done smoking & forget it. It might be an interesting way to finish jerky 'though...hmm.

When the unit is plugged in, there should be no electricity going to the heat element.

Give Customer Service a call.

Hi everyone,

Smokin is correct. If the unit continues to heat with the thermostat turned off, it has a faulty thermostat. Give our customer service group a call at (800) 423-0698.

Stuart's gang sent me a replacement thermostat for this problem, worked fine ever since, took about 1/2 hour to install. Watch out for fiberglass insulation when taking back off smoker, can get itchy.
