I purchased this thermometer and during smoking a pork butt in 35* weather, after about an hour or so I realized the "receiver" unit had locked up ... the sender was accurately displaying the smoker & food temps, but the receiver just stopped matching up with the sender or displaying temp changes at all.

Is this typical in colder weather for this unit, or is this just a crappy unit?

Any comments appreciated.

My Maverick occasionally loses the signal like that also. The Maverick folks tell me that some other wireless signal interferes and closes the unit down. That, of course, is horse s**t. I once used it at our hunting camp. No cell phones, no electricity, no radio, etc. Just me two dogs, three guys, and a ton of beer six miles out in the woods. It lost its signal a couple of times from only six feet.
Anyways, it doesn't happen a lot to me. I just reset and go on.
The Polder he is referring to is a stationary remote thermomter. If you use a Polder, you would have to go where the base unit is to check the temp. The ET-73 transmits the temps, when it works in your case, to the reception unit.

I use an ET-73 all the time. While it does not have the range as advertised, it gives me enough range that I can have the reception unit inside the house so I can hear the alarm if it goes off.

I would suggest you call Maverick and speak to their customer service about your problem. Can't hurt to call.
