Just a thought,is many owners will never see the forum.

Next, you may only get a response from the folks that added one,and at least 90% of the folks on the circuit never worry about one.

The moderator here uses just a cap-for the high Ok winds.

Some guys that cook inside their trailers have them.

Our team has all the different models of FEC s and we don't use them.

Hope this helps, until some folks chime in.
Carlo,
I have had an FEC-100 since fall of '09. When I first got it I noticed some temperature swings and also wondered about adding a pipe and cap. I found that with time and use the temperature went away. I'm not sure exactly when that happened but it did happen. I also now start my FEC-100 45 to 60 minutes before putting any product in it.
Thanks Tom & Mountain man for your comments,

I agree with you both, since i live in California, and I will never be a Compition Cooker, but I do want to be as close to one as possible, I’m not rushing to buy a cap or a pipe since in my case where I live and where my unit lives there is practically no wind at all when i cook, I just spent 1.5 Hours on the phone with Cookshack and Tony was stating that i probably have a draft issue, to which I don’t agree.. And Yes MountainMan, I have just learned this weekend to preheat the Cooker, I seen my Temp Swings drop to about 12 degrees each way, and again i have about 12 cooks on this unit very low hours on it.. so i will be allot more excited to see the swings slow down, also cleaning out the pot ever time has made for more stable temps as well.. I hope more comments are made on this topic; I’m here to learn and someday ever help support fellow new owners...

Also, the more full the cooker, and like mountainman says-let it run awhile.

Turn the cooker so the high winds aren't directly into the exhaust/vent.

Sure Tom, But where im at there is no winds to worry about.. unfortunatly I don’t cook allot of meat at once but enough to last a couple of days, I found out recently i like hot Tritips vers cold TriTips, so the good news is that im using it more, My Ducane grill just sits there now with barely any use.. LOL just for Steaks...
Carlo, I've used a 3' extension w/a wind/rain cap in high winds and have had no problems w/temp swings. Got a 300 on a trailer so wherever I take it to cook, I bring the stack extension and cap with me. I use the cap if I cook all night in case a rain shower comes by, which happens a lot here in NW Florida.
We are having 20 degree swings as well on a new 100. But we are blaming it on the weather ... 3 degrees and windy our last cook.

My question is why is there a 5in outlet on this size smoker? Has anyone tried to reduce the outlet? What would the effects on airflow be?

And is there an algorithm to be learned as there is on a Stoker.

Im Sure Fast Freddie will jump in this conservation when he gets the chance i think its a great question aswell, Smokers Purgatory do you clean your firepot out every time aswell and warm it up to what ever temp you going to cook like 45min ahead?
Well like I say we just got ours home about 6 weeks ago so we have less than 10 cooks on it.

I can’t say it was cleaned every time. But in looking at it I don’t believe there is any build up of un-burnt pellets.

No we do not let it warm up. I don’t mind the initials overshoot. I’m just a little concerned over our last cook.

I don’t think there is a problem with our smoker. I’m just trying to understand it better.
Just a note, I use an elbow, 3 foot pipe and a 3 foot cap. AS far as temp swings, there are a dozen different reasons that I found could cause them. I spent 7 months of every saturday tinkering around and now have 30-+ swings down to 2 either way. I posted my number in an earlier post, anyone can call if they want to discuss their individual issue or post it and ill try to post back what i did, smoke on!

A three foot cap? That's a big one.

I do have to say I called STLDoc he clued me in and seems to have made his unit working perfectly awsome. Me just him telling me to clued me in on preheating my oven for 45 minutes that alone dropped my swings way down from what i origalialy posted it pegged about 14* both directions but after a couple of seconds it corrected it self to about 8* witch i am very happy with at this point, and just want everyone knowing my unit is still new and breaking so im sure that it will even drop to less after allot more cooks on it.

And keep your firbox clean you dirty smoker!
Smoked some chicken and fish yesterday. 30 something outside with little to no wind.

I used my stoker to graph our temp swings with two probes. (see attachment) One on the top shelf, one on the second from the bottom. Set the FEC 100 at 250 degrees.

At 3:30 we moved one pan of chicken to he top shelf, which was right beside the temp probe. But notice the flop in temps that continue for an hour until we opened the door. Air flow?
