How much wood?

Got a 12 lb untrimmed brisket. How many ounces of wood should I use? Also type? Also also I've read discussions on laying wood on endgrain or flat. I usually lay it flat. Is that proper?

Hickory, Oak or Mesquite for the wood. I lay the wood flat. Others on end. Enjoy.

I use hickory, sometimes use a little pecan with it. Lay it flat, experiment with the amount of smoke you like. I prefer a good fairly heavy smoke so use more wood.
