How tight does the cold smoke baffle fit in a Smokette?

I would like to use a sheet of 1/4 inch aluminum to make a cold smoke baffle. How tight does it have to fit to let the smoke work and not get the food hot?

How tight does the factory baffle fit in the smokette 009/008?

I haven't looked in a while so I am estimating ... probably about 1/2" clearance on all four sides.
