My smoker arrived today, wasw not expecting it before NEXT Tuesday! It came a week early!!! WOW!! I need to find a mat or something to under it so it doesn't stain my wood deck! I think the closer to the house the more I will use it! I have not opened the box yet as the cover is on back order!! UUUGGHHH I also need to get a thermometer any suggestions where to get one that can withstand a LONG SMOKE! I would love to get it in place so I can season it and possible smoke a butt this weekend!!

Unbox that thing NOW! Put a trash bag under it temporarily if you are concerned about your deck. Seasoning it will not produce anything that will harm or stain the deck.

Therms - I prefer Taylor and Maverick.

Keep it close to the house. If you need to use an extension cord make darn sure its gague is as heavy if not heavier than the CS cord.

Remember to come to the forum for times & temps. Do not rely on the recipe book that came with your CS smoker!

Good luck & keep us informed! Big Grin
lovetocook,

I got my maverick thermometer at Bed Bath & Beyond. $35 It is one that has a remote reciever so you can monitor the temp from inside the house, It also has a temp displayed on the unit outside. I have used it for over a year on my gas grill. I also plan to use it to monitor overnight smokes as it will alarm at preset temps.
I think he means that I was coming close to advertising on the forum. Probably because I listed price along with the place.

the forum rules say there is to be no advertising and I certainly would not want the forum to turn into a bunch of ads and popups.

Sorry for the messup but but just trying to give as much info as possible.

Bonjour, Frank Tha Freak,

In order to be UL listed the thing has to be able to withstand some hideous precipitation like driving rain from 360 degrees. That may not be exactly right but it's something that bad. It will not hurt it one bit to sit outside if you keep it under the eaves of your house or at least offer it some protection. The best solution is a cover, of course.
Bon Jour Tha Freak,

"Thread jacking" is where something is being dicussed and right in the middle of the dicussion, someone throws in a completely different topic; Like when we were talking about deck stains and then you tossed in the question about the cover and Big DMK mentioned his thermometer.

I was just ribbing you guys. Don't go all "jazzspot" on me. Big Grin Big Grin (PS: Hope he comes back.)

BTW--- BigDMK, you didn't mess up at all. Welcome to the forum. Besides, GLH is the bouncer, not me. Wink
Actually if you go back to my orginal post I mentioned I needed to get some to put the smoker on and I needed a thermometer before I started using the smoker! Not too sure there was thread jacking going on or not! Sorry if made too many comments in my original post!
Thanks for the advice. Hope to use the smoker this weekend!!!
Lovetocook & other new-to-the Forum:

Please don't feel bad about "threa-jacking." It's a common occurance and usually done without notice and unintentionally. No big deeal.

The problem lies in getting off topic and starting a good discussion with valuable info. Then, months latter you remember "Ummm, I remember readin that (?) somewhere" and go a searching thru the topic headlines and it's nowhere to be found. Just makes it easier to stay on-topic.

To the best of my knowledge, "thread-jacking" is a misdemeanor. Now, if you start using the "f" word (foil) or discuss or bring up the topiic of getting a smoke ring (SR), our resident guru of Q, bordeaux of butts and tickler of ribs, SmokinOkie may chastize you severly. In all actuality, his bark is bigger than his bite! Big Grin

Have fun here and learn along with the rest of us! Big Grin
