Will the cold weather affect the IQ from operating properly or just the readout.
I have done several cooks when you simply could not read the IQ because of the cold but the butts turned out great...just a pain trying to get the proper readings.
Last night I used a hair dryer to warm the IQ up...set the temp and time...then hooked up a electric heating pad and put it over the IQ...it got to -7 overnight and you can read the settings. Is this neccessary or can I just use the hair dryer to warm it up when I want the readings????

Another thing that works well is to use the gel packs that come in those Pyrex cook-n-carry set ups. You just throw the gel pack in the microwave for a minute or two, and then lay the warmed gel pack on the keyboard to help warm the controls up. Just don't overheat the gel pack. It should just be warm enough to still be handled with your hands.
I have this problem just about all winter. What I usually do is set my cook time an extra hour or two. That way my FE just keeps hummin' along.I check the product with a thermometer to get it where I want it.I have also poured hot(tap) water directly and gently on the pad...this quickly thaws it out and I can then add more time.I know adding water is not the most popular way to go..but I have never had a problem with my pad in any way.Rob
