Yeah, we've talked about those over the years. I don't have it handy, but we even had a photo essay/report from such a visit.

Tom will have some info, Roadfood usually talks about them.

If your close I'd eat at all of them. Most folks have preferences. I won't give mine in advance, just go for it, eat and eat and eat...
I was in Austin for the NBBQA's Annual Conference.

My choices, given thye ones you mention:
1) Smitty's (Unbelievable atmosphere. You feel like you're in a James Dean 1950's flick. Plus, their pits have to be seen to be believed. I was going to pass it up as I had already eaten at Kreuz's and Black's and didn't hink I could eat anymore. But Mike Mills (3-time MIM champ) was with me, and said "you can't skip Smitty's." He was right. Pits with fire on the floor! Watch your step! The Pitmaster, John Fullilove, is quite a character.

2) Kreuz's. You order your meat, they dump it on paper that serves as everyone's serving tray, and everybody jumps in, grabbing whatever they want.

Didn't make it to Chisholm trail. Next year.

Black's? Didn't do it for me. I'd pass.

Not on your list, but not to be missed - "The Salt Lick" in Drftwood.
Bluesman, I checked out Driftwood, Tx and it is only 32 miles from Lockhart and on the other side of I35 so The Salt Lick has been added to my list. Thanks.

Okie, I will follow your advice and "eat, eat, eat". Beings I could not find the photo/essay report I will just do the trip and make up a new report myself. When I get back you can help me load it and the pictures.
Thanks to Bluesman for recommending The Salt Lick. We went with my high school buddy and came to find out his company supplies them the Angus Beef they use. They ship a full two semi truck loads a week to the restaurant.

Cooper's BBQ in Llano smokes a great 1 inch thick pork chop. As you know, they use black pepper and it turns out some great tasting food.

More later...I must get my notes and pictures together.

Okay, thanks, that adds another to my "return visit to Texas" list when we head back south in the RV for winter months. And, I am a KCBS certified judge and I am certain there was something in our oath that said we must eat at and judge as many Q places as possible. I am sure I remember that.
