Anyone using the Maverick 73 have a problem with the sensor reading temps about 50deg higher than the actual cooking temperature?

Used this for the first time last week and I was getting temp reading around 230deg on the Maverick when the FEC100 built-in probe was around 180. I double checked its accuracy by comparing two other temp probes that gave readings at around the 180deg mark, indicating that nothing is wrong with the FEC100 probe.

The Maverick reads accurate at room temp, but appears to be off at temps over 100deg or so.

Boil some water and take a reading. Should be around 212 depending on your elevation.

I haven't found a thermometer I like yet. I have 5 now, polder, maverick, weber, and a couple more. I'm lucky to find 2 out of the 5 before a smoke that reads about right.

Anyone have a good thermometer make and model that's been REAL reliable over a few smokes. I always take care in mine not to let water get into the probe.

Thanks,

Well,a lot of us on the circuit go to Target and buy Taylors for about $15.

I interchange the probes, let 'em get rained on,drop 'em,close the doors on the cables, never change the batteries.

I've got some that are 6-7 years old.

Hope this helps a little.

Yep,I bought me one o' them fancy Mavericks.

My wife can get it to turn on and off good.

It's buried in my kit,if you ever need to borrow it at a cookoff.
I commonly use the $15 pyrex models which have proven to be pretty accurate. I am not concerned about constantly monitoring the meat, but rather the temperature that the smoker is cooking at. I have come to trust the built-in nominal reading given by the fec, but I have experience the fire going out. Before I discovered the problem, over two hours went by and I had cooking time lost and overflowing pellets from the burning pot. The main reason I started using the fec is so that I could have more fun (as well as a good night sleep) without having to constantly monitor the cooking temp like I used to do with my stick burner. I need an accurate temp gauge that will alert or wake me if the cooking temp gets to hot or cold. The Maverick has that capability, but I'm not confident in its accuracy anymore. It is too bad that the fec does not have a simple alerting system built-in.

Is anyone aware of a really good temperature monitoring system to set alerts for a maximum high and low?
