New SM 008 Latch question

Its more or less a child safety feature. That way when you are enjoying "set it and forget it" BBQ while watching the game and drinking a cold one, young ones cant go and ruin your afternoon!

It may also help provide a tighter seal. I dont know about that one though. Thats why I wrote this outside of my .02.

I must admit I like the old one better. I have one of each. My children know better than to mess with DADS mealmaker (if they want to eat at my table!!)Everything is childproof these days!BAH...... Ok off my box now.

Designed by engineers, built by engineers, and used by engineers. But! It is people proof. The other day I had to chase the CS55 down the deck while I was trying to close the latch. Still love it though!

Ellbee, I empathize with you. I purchased my 008 on Sat. 1/29 and the slider ring does not "lock". It appears the clasp on the door is uneven and a little high. The latch does keep the door closed and all seems to work well, meat taste great, but it is a concern.

I bought a new 008 in September and was quite surprised to see the change since the 008 I bought just a year earlier. I still haven't got used to the new latch, but just thought it was me resisting change.

I dislike that latch with a purple passion.. I'm going to remove the slide before the next cook.

Otherwise, my 008 ROCKS!!!

You have to brace it up against something or else you end up chaseing your meal down the road.

I just took the bolt out of the latch to remove the "slider" on the handle and was surprized to find it was a metric nut! One of the things that swayed me to this brand was the "made in USA" label. Anybody know why they choose to use metric hardware.

Well, I am glad the latch is the way it is. Although we may all be able to put the fear of the BBQ gods into our own kids, there is always the rest of the neighborhood kids out there. And ts not always the kids.........I once caught the neighbor boys DAD trying to sneak a peak at what was going on inside the little black box. I watched him for about a minute through the window before he caught me catching him. We both started busting a gut, and i told him I'd bring him some over when it was done.

Opening the magic black box is a hanging offense in Florida!
