My FEC does not seem to care how I load it, within reason.
I have the IQ4 controller and it just goes to my desired temp and stays there.

When I have a "small need" cook--I normally cook an extra butt or brisket or both or whatever for the freezer. Uses the same amount of fuel and I get more meat for my fuel $$ Smiler

The only caveat is to keep some room on all shelves for air/smoke flow, just like any cooker.

Although the FE has an IQ controller, it doesn't know if there are 1 or 6 in there.

It's very efficient as a smoker, you'll find you actually use it more for small cooks. You don't have to load up an offset and a full load of wood just to cook one butt.

One will work fine, do it frequently. Actually I do 2 at a time because they come that way.

The only issue I know is overloading it, with say 16 butts, but I've done that also. Like Tim said, airflow will be your issue. Oh, and if you ever cook that many, clean the grease drip tray.
