Went to Sam's this morning to purchase meat for the cookoff this weekend and I didn't see any pork butt. Jim came out and said "They won't let us sell it individually anymore, we can only sell it by the case." Thought he was joking. Not. FDA came in (all the Sam's Clubs) and told them they couldn't sell it like that because on the cryovac it doesn't have the FDA inspection logo. Called four stores in the KC area and it's the same.

I see a big pork butt by the case sale coming on, at least until they
have it all worked out.

Smokin-

I can't agree with you on "Just another case of the MAN keeping the Q'ers down". I assume you're referring to the Dept of Ag as the man.

Nobody is above the law, and it is important all meat packages carry the USDA "bug". What were they thinking?

Not carrying the USDA bug COULD mean many things. Traceability would be my main concern. Smaller locker plants have folded after doing something illegal, after being unable to regain their favorable reputation [I'm guessing Sam's will come out ok].

I've been on many kill floors ans processing plants and have seen the inspectors in action.

They are for our protection.

Sorry Roger, I'm talking about Sam's, we won't get into a discussion about Inspectors.

If they sell the butts by the case and the ONLY reason they don't sell them individually is because they lack a marking, then what does that tell you about the butts IN the case?

And some Sam's will and some Sam's won't. That's why I miss my good old butcher that I could trust...none of them around anymore because of insurance problems.
