I bought a used (Aug 2000) model 50 last month. After wiring it into my cook shed where it shares space with 3 Traegers I left it until after Christmas to try it out. Boy, was I surprised to grab hold of the wood box and get burned. I guess off doesn't really mean off all the way. I've now wired it to a switch box. Anyone else notice this or an unexpected power bill?

Amen to what Cadillac said.

Personally, when I am finished with a smoke my unit gets unplugged. Kind of a failsafe against getting burned and wearing out the heating element if left unused for any length of time. 'Yes," the unit is supposed to be off in the straight-up position.

Just my $0.02...

Off is off. That is right however just past off is on and it will make the smoker about 100 degrees. One thing to try is that with a cold smoker slowly turn the dial up you should hear a noticable click when the thermostat clicks on. If you don't then it was probably on from the start.

By the way some smokers may use an electronic thermo but I think the 50 is mechanical.
