I'm brand new to this forum and just as new to the Cookshack smoker, which I got today and just finished seasoning.

I've had my Char-Broil Quantum grill for about 2 months and have been using the Oregon Scientific Talking Thermometer thermometer with great success. It can get annoying because it tells you when the temp is within 5 degrees of the set temperature and continues to tell you until you push a button to stop it. Since I'm hard of hearing, not only does that not bother me, it's helpful. I've had no problems whatever with this thermometer, it is very accurate and reliable. A little pricey, but as far as I'm concerned, well worth it. Once I put the probe in the meat, turn on the sending unit, then the receiving unit, I place it in its holder on my desk, where I can surf the net, watch TV and keep an eye on the meat temp.

The preset temps are out of date according to the current FDA recommendations, but allows you to put in your own settings, and also has a timer.

Thanks

Pat

I tried those remote probes and found the regular ones work just good because the food is not cook to an exact temperature. It is ok to miss by one or two degree giving a 10-15 minute window to miss. I have found understanding cooktimes, texture, temperature are all important.

I thought the Oregon Scientific Talking Thermometer was annoying. I still have it but prefer the polder unit.
xcon897,

The comment about it being annoying is definitely the most common one I see, however, I only have to push any button once to shut it up and being hard of hearing, it's kinda' nice having it nudge me.

Which Polder thermometer do you have? I may check into that one also.

Thanks

Pat
I've owned this since last Christmas. I've owned a lot of OS products and this one has been a bit of a disappointment compared to past purchases. The design is pretty well suited to the cookshack: sender sits on top of the smoker and the cable snakes through the vent. Aside from the annoying announcements that come at the wrong times the UI is really really stupid and difficult to operate. In addition one or both of the units lose their brains on a regular basis and need to be reset.

When it dies alltogether I am definitely going to buy another brand which only deals with temp and doesn't try to add value by selecting meat/doneness but I defintely like the convenience of wireless/
