We had a guy tell us that his friend used to smoke fish with palmetto root. Have you ever heard of that? He said he won lots of contests for smoked fish. I'm wondering if he's pulling my leg.

I ain't never heard tell of using palmetto leaves, roots or shoots. Think I'll pass and just never win nothing.
There is an old-old timer age 89 and still smokes, here in Cedar Key and I will check with him, tho. Don't use any until I check with him.

I checked with Mr. Richburg, he use to own Richburg's Wholesale Seafoods here in Cedar Key, now retired, but still smoking and he said someone was pulling your leg. He said, "ain't nobody ever used weeds or weed roots around here to smoke fish or anything else and palmetto is weeds."
Keep in mind, if it isn't red bay he may consider, as well, any other wood a weed.

Miss Peg, I would tend to agree with SMullet. Palmetto is so far from wood, hard to imagine...
But, check this out: Tom (the Tom) once reported here that he knew dudes (knew of dudes) in New York who used cardboard to smoke meat.

I think the NY bunch was smoking something else before smoking with cardboard - most likely jagged leaf weeds.
